A Basic Introduction to Rhythm
Part 3: Meter

Music is often grouped into repeating beat patterns that we call meter.

The most common meters are duple meter, which has groups of two beats; triple meter, which has groups of three beats; and quadruple meter, which has groups of four beats.

In each of the examples below, the music is very simple and very similar, but there is a clear difference between the meter in each one. While listening to the duple meter example, count patterns of “one - two” on each beat. For the triple meter example, count “one - two - three.” For the quadruple meter example, count “one - two - three - four.” RhythmBot will count along with you.

Now let’s learn about music notation.
